Andrew Henry Maertens was born on June 20, 1907, in Ghent, to August and Elodie (Van Hove) Maertens. As a young child, he lived with his family in Florida before returning to Ghent at age seven. In 1935, Andrew was united in marriage to Margaret Andries at St. Clotilde Catholic Church in Green Valley. Andy worked at a variety of jobs including as a city engineer and for Swift Company before he began Andyâs Plumbing where he worked into his nineties. Andy was a lifelong member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church where he was involved with many projects. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, spending time at local lakes and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Andy was well read and enjoyed following current events. He will be remembered for quoting his favorite adages. Andy died on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the Avera Marshall Longterm Care Center. He is survived by his children Jim Maertens of Fort Worth, TX, Carolyn (Dick) Larson of Vadnais Heights, Ray (Pat) Maertens of St. Paul, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, siblings and one grandson.
