Bernice Cecelia (Chandler) Furhmann was born on December 31, 1919, in
Fairview Township of Lyon County, Minnesota, to Homer and Mary (Smith) Chandler. She was the third of five children. Bernice attended St. Josephâs Catholic School and graduated from Marshall High School in 1939. She and Carl Fuhrmann were married on May 17, 1944, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. The couple farmed East of Marshall for 50 years.
Bernice was employed by the Lyon County ASCS office for 25 years. She was an active 4-H leader of the Clifton 4-H club and also the Holy Redeemer Ladiesâ Guild and a member of Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards, dancing and also did volunteer work.
Bernice died on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by daughters Kathleen (Tom) Lanoue of Cary, NC, Jean (John) Tangren of Watertown, SD, son Allen (Debra) Fuhrmann of Marshall, brother John Chandler, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1993, two grandsons, sisters Mary Jastram, Loretta Chandler, brother Homer Chandler and half-sister Gertrude Owen.
Memorials are preferred to Prairie Home Hospice.
