Bernie was born on July 8, 1936, in Marshall, to Lloyd and Barbara (Kirchen) Archbold. He attended St. Josephâs Academy, and was the first graduate of Central Catholic High School in Marshall. Bernie then attended St. Johnâs University where he was the quarterback for his beloved âJohnniesâ. After graduation, he returned to Marshall where he began a 40+ year career as a District Agent with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. On June 18, 1960, Bernie was united in marriage to Carol Stephan in Long Prairie, MN.
There was nothing more important to Bernie than his faith in God, Carol his wife, their five children and 17 grandkids. Every new day was full of excitement and adventure, from going out for a coffee and a donut to an African safari. Making friends, helping others and traveling the world were his driving forces. His enthusiasm for golfing, fishing for âwhoppersâ, hunting, playing cards and a Lake Sarah sunset were rivaled only by his passion for St. Johnâs football, Holy Redeemer Church and school, and his Northwestern Mutual connections. Bernie also took great pride in his community and served many organizations including the Jaycees, Toastmasters, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, City Council, Parish Council, Holy Redeemer Board of Administration, the Marshall Golf Club Board, Marshall Hospital Board, RCBV Board, Life Underwriters Board, District Agent Chairs, St Johnâs University Alumni, Lyon County Heart Assn, Holy Redeemer Foundation, SSU Foundation, Central Planning and Giving Committee. He received many awards for his service including the Distinguished Service Award, the G. Bennet Serrill award and induction into the Pride in the Tiger Hall of Honor.
