Bertha Marie (Hamerlink) Mortier was born on August 28, 1907, in Grandview Township to Cyriel and Emma (Geeraert) Hamerlink. She grew up on a farm North of Minneota. On February 21, 1928, she was united in marriage to Charles Mortier at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. The couple farmed South of Ghent for six years before moving to a farm West of Marshall. In 1968, they retired and moved into town. Bertha lived at Hill Street Place for nearly 10 years before moving to the Morningside Heights Care Center. She enjoyed sewing, especially pillowcase dolls. Bertha enjoyed visiting and hosting family and friends. She will be remembered for always having the coffee pot on and cookies available.
Bertha died on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by her son Francis (and Hon) Mortier of Marshall, daughters Phyllis (and Robert) Carr of Marshall, Joan (and Ken) Collins of American Canyon, CA, Mary of Mankato, daughter-in-law Ruth Mortier of Marshall, 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and close personal friend Donna Schuelke of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 75 years, Charles, daughter Dorothy, son Joe and grandson Michael Collins.
