Betty Jean (Hurd) Sik was born on July 5, 1930, in Lake Benton, to Alfred and Verna (Johannson) Hurd. She grew up in the Lake Benton area. On October 5, 1948, she was united in marriage to Clemens Sik at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno. The couple lived in the Ivanhoe area until moving to Marshall in 1960. Betty worked at a variety of jobs including the Super Value and Hy-Vee bakery, for Schwan Food Company as a food taster, but most of her time was spent operating her home daycare. Betty enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards, going to the casino, gardening and canning. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall where she was active as a Eucharistic Minister. Betty died unexpectedly on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at her home in Marshall.
She is survived by her husband, Clem, of Marshall, children Richard Sheik of Nisswa, Roger Sik of Taunton and Jean Woltjer of Sioux Falls, SD, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, siblings Delores (and Ray) Devos of Taunton, Jack Hurd of Sibley, Lila (and Alvin) Hammerschmidt of Wabasso, Darlene Bontjes of Breckenridge, Gary (and Terri) Hurd of Marshall, Dale Hurd of Melrose and Brent (and Donna) Hurd of Sheldon. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Michael.
