The funeral service for Bruce Grow, 81, of Marshall, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall. In honor of Bruce, who never wore a suit unless he had to, the family requests that attendees wear their Sunday best: flannel, camouflage, and jeans.
Bruce Melvin Grow was born on June 30, 1943, in San Diego, CA, to Ronald and Charlotte (Van Hoosen) Grow. Ronald was in the United States Navy, so Bruce moved around the country with his parents. They lived in Texas and Arkansas, and Bruce started school in Grand Island, Nebraska. The family eventually settled in Marshall, and Bruce graduated from Marshall High School in 1962. On April 10, 1964, Bruce married Phyllis Chatleain at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Marshall. The couple soon welcomed their daughter, Sheila.
Bruce was a hard worker his entire life. He began delivering papers as a boy and later worked on a mink farm. As a junior in high school, Bruce began working for the City of Marshall. He began as summer help, then received his boiler license and became a boiler operator at the Marshall Power Plant. He later worked for Marshall Municipal Utilities, retiring as a water foreman in October of 1998. In 1999, he opened Co-Zac Bait Shop, which he ran for 14 years.
Bruce was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, including salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. He was an excellent hunter, with two deer registered with the Minnesota Deer Classic record book. Bruce also enjoyed elk hunting trips in Montana and Wyoming. He took four trips to Namibia, Africa, bringing back numerous wildlife trophies. He was proud to go to Africa twice with Sheila, and once with his grandsons, Cody and Zachary. Bruce also enjoyed trapping, and he sewed coats and vests out of coyote fur. Bruce was a longtime member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, North American Hunting Club, and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Bruce was a quiet man who didn’t like to be the center of attention. He enjoyed spoiling his family, especially his grandchildren. He also loved time spent with family and friends, whether it be on a lake, in the woods, or in the tall grass. At the end of his life, Bruce was diagnosed with cancer. He eventually moved into Sheila’s home, where he was given loving care by his family. He was thankful for family and friends who came to visit and spend time with him.
Bruce died on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, under the care of his loved ones. He is survived by his mother Charlotte Grow; daughter Sheila (Jeff) Drum; grandson Cody (Meghan Lozinski) Drum, their children Charlotte “Lottie” and Frances “Fenna;” grandson Zachary Drum (Brittney Ormberg); Stevie, his loyal hunting companion; as well as other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis, and his father Ronald Grow.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Avera Morningside Heights and Avera at Home Hospice for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
