Mass of Christian Burial for Caroline “Carrie” Verschelde, 99, of Minneota, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at Rehkamp – Horvath Funeral Home in Minneota. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at St. Edward Catholic Cemetery in Minneota. Caroline Mary (Van Uden) was born on August 2, 1911, in Minneota, to Anton and Mary (Hennen) Van Uden. On November 16, 1933, she was united in marriage to Herman Verschelde. The couple farmed until 1957. After Herman’s death, Caroline moved to Minneota where she worked for the city of Minneota for 25 years, retiring in 2003. She was one of the first members of the Westerheim Rural Life Extension Club, and a member for over 50 years. She was also an active member of the Joan of Arc Society. She prepared many hot dishes for weddings and funerals. She also helped clean the church basement. Caroline also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and was a gold star mother. She enjoyed crocheting, quilt making and embroidering. Caroline died on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the Minneota Manor in Minneota. She is survived by her children Eileen Differding of Minneota, Margaret (Lou) Spinner of Marshall, Rita (Bob Jr.) Mack of Ivanhoe, Kathleen Hoffmann of Omaha, NE, Carolyn Roles of Minneota, Bernadette Verschelde of Osseo, JoAnn Scheerhoorn of Sioux Falls, SD, James Verschelde of Redwood Falls, 27 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren and her brother Joe Van Uden. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Mary, son David, one grandchild, one great-grandchild and four sons-in-law; Alvin, Eddie, Wayne and Larry and five siblings.
