Catherine J. (Doom) Verkinderen was born in Lake Marshall Township near Marshall, MN on May 31, 1938 to Emil and Marie (VanMoer) Doom. Second oldest of five children, she grew up on the family farm near Marshall and attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School and Central Catholic Highschool later graduating from the McKennan Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, SD, May 1959. In October 1959, she was united in marriage to Joseph H. Verkinderen at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. They were married for 56 years and raised four children together on their family farm just outside Marshall, MN. All their children also attended Holy Redeemer School and attended colleges in the state.
Catherine worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) until her retirement in 2009. She moved from Director in the Emergency Room at Weiner Memorial Hospital to Director of Nursing for Marshall Public Schools for nearly 30 years before finishing her nursing career at Holy Redeemer School.
Catherine also enjoyed a multitude of activities and hobbies. It was not a secret that she was always on the go making things happen for her family, her church, and her community! She was an avid, “champion” quilter, sewer, gardener, bridge card player, church choir and funeral choir member, church parish council member, Catholic Daughters treasurer, and player of piano and drums. Furthermore, she enjoyed attending all her children’s sports and music programs. She never sat at an activity with her hands idle! Her numerous handiwork items provided countless gifts to others…both loved ones and strangers. Catherine was known to be proper, productive, and practical at all times, making sure to impart her values of hard work and faith on her children for which they are immensely grateful.
Catherine died at Heritage Pointe Senior Living Center in Marshall on Saturday, December 14, 2024, this past week where she resided for nearly 9 years.
