Clara Elizabeth Schultz My Life I was born at Hills, MN on April 15, 1911 to Ole and Anna (Melum) Riste, who emigrated here from Norway around the 1900, and they were married in Fairbault, MN in 1905. I was the third of five children which included, Ida, Gina, myself, Irene and Carl. At one year of age my family moved to a farm a mile south of Florence, MN. I was baptized at Hills, MN and confirmed at Opdahl Lutheran Church in Florence. I attended Twin Lakes Country School for my first eight years of school, and then drove a Model T Ford to high school in Tyler, MN, where I graduated. During summer vacation between my sophomore and junior years I worked as a waitress at Worthington, MN and stayed with my sister, Gina and her husband Ernest Stelter. In my junior to senior year I worked as a waitress in Hills, MN. After finishing high school I went to Marshall, MN and did housework for Mrs. Frank Wetherbee until her death, when I went to work at her son’s place. Arthur Schultz and I were married at the Lutheran parsonage in Ruthton, MN on February 14, 1934 by Pastor Stenseth. George Mitzner and Lois Manguson were our attendants and who were the only ones at our marriage. I wore a pretty navy blue dress given to me by Ida and Lil Stelter gave me a shower at her home. Our first home was what we called the “Hope Place”, one and a half miles east of Art’s folks. We lived there three years, then moved to the corner three miles east of the Red Top Schoolhouse, and remained there nine years. In 1937, Sheldon was born and in 1944, Neil was born, while we lived there. Sheldon went to country school there for three years before we moved to a place closer to Lynd, MN, one a half miles north of where we had first lived. After nine years we moved to our farm northwest of Russell, MN, where Neil lived for some time. We remained there until we moved into Balaton, MN in 1972 when we retired. We bought and remodeled a small house in Balaton in which I lived after Art passed away on June 13, 1988, until November of 2005 when I became a resident of the Lakeview Apartments in Balaton. As of this writing I am 90 years old and still doing my own work, if not as well as I would like. I am a member of St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Balaton and a very longtime member of the ladies aide. I have enjoyed watching many Twins games and also in my earlier years, bowling. I also enjoyed many weekly card games and spending time with my loving family. (This was found inside Clara’s Bible by her family) In December of 2007 Clara became a resident of the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall where she died, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the age of 97. Clara is survived by her two sons, Sheldon (Linda) Schultz of Tyler, MN and Neil (Gayle) Schultz of Slayton, MN; eight grandchildren, Perry, Gregg, Cindy, Jeff, Justin, Dawn, Jill, and Kimberly; nineteen great-grandchildren; one brother in law, Melville Schultz of Belle Plain, MN; three sisters in law, Deloris (Don) Benson of Taylor’s Falls, MN, Violet Schultz of Orangevale, CA and Evelyn Schultz of Marshall, MN; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Her husband, Arthur, parents, one brother, Carl Riste and three sisters, Ida, Gina and Irene preceded her in death.
