Cleo Mathias Schreier

Cleo Mathias Schreier, age 84 of Balaton, MN passed away on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Slayton, MN. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall, MN. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 PM on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Almlie Funeral Home in Balaton, MN with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. The Almlie Funeral Home of Balaton is handling the arrangements. Cleo Mathias Schreier was born on November 27, 1925 to Peter Sr. and Alice (Beach) Schreier on the family farm in Lime Lake Township, Murray County. He attended country school receiving his diploma from Murray County Central and was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. After graduating, he farmed with his father and brother, Peter Jr. until being drafted into the U.S. Army on March 9, 1945. While in the Army, Cleo spent one year in Japan receiving the Army of Occupation Medal, Asiatic – Pacific Service Medal, and the Meritorius Unit Award Victory Medal before being discharged on November 27, 1946. After his discharge, he went back to work on the family farm. On July 6, 1957 Cleo married Betty Greenman at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Currie, MN. Over the years, they moved several times between Arizona and Balaton area before settling on the farm south of Balaton in 1975. In his early years, Cleo worked in house construction in Arizona and Minnesota before returning to the Balaton area. He then farmed for many years and also worked for the railroad a few years during this time. Cleo was a member of the Knights of Columbus, loved farming, especially raising cattle and chickens, liked to help Betty in the garden, take his children fishing, and loved spending time with his family and friends. In October of 2009, Cleo became a resident of the Golden Living Center in Slayton, MN as the result of an automobile accident where he died on Friday, February 5, 2010. Cleo is survived by his two sons, Larry Schreier of Lynd, MN and Randy (Connie) Schreier of Balaton, MN; three brothers, Peter Jr. (Evelyn) Schreier of Currie, MN, Darrel (Doris) Schreier of Slayton, MN, and Ronald (Judy) Schreier of Currie, MN; eight grandchildren, Sarah (and special friend Ryan), Larry Jr., Sheila (and special friend Jason), Shawn, Randy Jr., Chad (Nicole), Jeremy, and Katie; fourteen great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His parents, wife Betty, daughter Suzanne, and sister Roselene preceded him in death. Blessed be his memory.
