Colleen Ann Hoekstra

Mass of Christian Burial for Colleen Hoekstra, 57, of Clara City, formerly of Cottonwood, will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Visitation will be Friday, January 14, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Interment will follow the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Cottonwood. . Colleen was born on July 31, 1964, in Marshall, to Remi and Harriet (DeBruyckere) Doom. She grew up in Cottonwood and graduated from Cottonwood High School. Colleen earned her Nursing Degree from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. She worked for Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar before beginning a career with Weiner Memorial Hospital, later Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall, where she had worked for the last 35 years. Colleen lived in rural Cottonwood for many years where she raised her four children. Throughout the years Colleen was involved in many activities with St. Mary’s Church, Lakeview School and the Cottonwood community. She was also involved with her children’s activities as a Boy Scouts leader and in 4-H.

On November 24, 2017, she was married to Wade Hoekstra at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Colleen and Wade enjoyed an active lifestyle together and celebrated time with friends and family.
Colleen’s favorite place was her lake home at Norway Lake, and loved sharing her time there with family and friends. She loved being out on the water, whether boating or paddle boarding. She put on many miles around the lake biking and walking.
Colleen was a familiar face at the Marshall hospital for 35 years. She took pride in her work and always sought to learn and improve. She was a great teacher to many over the years. Colleen was passionate about comforting patients and families and acting as a source of strength and compassion in people’s lives during some of their most emotional moments.
Colleen was especially proud to hold the title of “grandma.” She had a special bond with her grandbabies and enjoyed watching them learn and grow.

Colleen passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 6, 2022, while vacationing in Clearwater, Florida. She is survived by her husband, Wade, of Clara City; mother Harriet Doom of Cottonwood; daughter Alissa (and Jeremy) Vandelanotte of Cottonwood, grandchildren Gavin, Gary and Rowan; son Isaac Pehrson of Cottonwood; son Alex Pehrson (and Keely Huso) of Cottonwood; son Eric Pehrson of St. Cloud; step-children Zach (and Kristen) Hoekstra, Braden Hoekstra and Tommy Hoekstra all of Clara City; siblings Monica (and Don) Senden of Marshall; Bernie (and Duane) Louwagie of Marshall; Joyce Doom of Marshall; Jenny (and Ralph) Dieken of Marshall; Steve (and Brenda) Doom of Cottonwood and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Ray Doom.
