Daniel Constant Verkinderen was born on April 16, 1936, in Grandview Township, to Henry and Mary (Nuytten) Verkinderen. He grew up on the family farm near Ghent and graduated from Minneota High School in 1953. In 1959, Dan was united in marriage to Arlene Bauer at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Lucan. The couple farmed for a time before moving to Ghent in 1963. They owned and operated the Silver Dollar Bar in Ghent from 1963 – 1976. Dan then worked for the U.S. Post Office and for Lyon County Farm Service. Dan was an entrepreneur and kept busy selling items such as Rolle Bolles and Belgian Waffle Irons. He enjoyed gardening and tending to his pond. Dan was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was very helpful. Dan also enjoyed entertaining and socializing with friends. He was known as the “Icon of Ghent. Dan and Arlene enjoyed travelling, especially their six trips to Belgium. The most special was on their 50th wedding anniversary with their entire family present.
Dan died suddenly on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at his residence in Ghent. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Ghent, son Scott (and Peggy) and their children Meghan and Michael, of Eden Prairie, brother Joseph (and Catherine) of Marshall, sister Jane (and Ernie) Hennen of Marshall, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Charlotte Cattoor.
