Mass of Christian Burial for Darleen Dorenkamper, 77, of Minneota, will be Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. Darleen Doris Magandy was born February 22, 1945, in Tyler, to Elmer and Lucille (Hoberg) Magandy of Lake Benton. She and her mother lived with her grandparents, Hans and Clara Hoberg, until Elmer returned from serving in the Navy in WWII. The family moved to Ryder, ND, and then back to Minnesota, where they lived in the Ruthton, Florence, Tyler, and Ivanhoe areas.

Darleen attended Tyler and Ivanhoe schools as the family moved between the two areas. During her high school years, Darleen worked as a waitress in the Blue Room Café in Ivanhoe.

Darleen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethany Elim Lutheran Church in Ivanhoe in February 1962. She married her high school sweetheart, Rollyn Dorenkamper, on November 17, 1962, and was confirmed in the Catholic faith in July 1963. The couple lived on Rollyn’s grandmother’s farm west of Ivanhoe for five years. While there, the couple had two sons, and Darleen worked part-time doing daycare, waitressing, and then as a bookkeeper and reporter for the Ivanhoe Times newspaper. They moved into Ivanhoe in 1968, and then to Minneota in October 1969.

Darleen worked for Swift Co. and Schott Corporation, and was an Avon dealer during the years her sons were growing up. Darleen earned her GED high school equivalency in 1978 and a two year accounting certificate in an accelerated program at Canby Vo-Tech in 1979. She also took secretarial/clerk courses at Canby Vo-Tech in the 1980s. She was employed at the Minneota Mascot newspaper from fall 1988 until her retirement.

Darleen called herself a “professional volunteer” as she worked as an advocate for the Southwest Minnesota Sexual Assault program in Marshall for five years, serving as chairperson of the board of directors for three years; she was a 20 year member of the Minneota Girl Scouts, serving as Troop Leader, Service Unit Manager, Sales Manager, Council Delegate, Council Trainer, and Troop Consultant. She served as secretary of the Minneota Park Board and was a member of the Minneota Area Chamber of Commerce. She also worked with audio testing at the school and was a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer for many years.

She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and Joan of Arc Guild, and was a coordinator for the Scholarship Fund program for two years. She enjoyed home decorating, often helping friends wallpaper or paint, and she enjoyed oil painting, crafts, camping, flower gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Darleen died Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at the Hendricks Nursing Home. She is survived by her husband Rollyn of Minneota; sons Curt (Cindy) of Channahon, IL, and Dan of Porter; grandchildren Kassi (Tony) Valek of Blaine, Michael (Ashley) Dorenkamper of Valley Springs, SD, Kevin, Bryan, and Matthew Dorenkamper of Channahon, IL, and Hannah Beck of Prescott Valley, AZ; great-grandchildren Lincoln, Hudson, and Maverick Valek, Noah and Josiah Dorenkamper; brother Dale (Myrna) Magandy of Buffalo; three nephews and a niece; and several other relatives and friends.

Darleen was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Lucille Magandy, and her brother Gerald Magandy.
