According to Dave, he was born on September 23, 1935, at Tedâs Bar in Ghent, MN. Upon further research, the family discovered that he was actually born on that date at home in rural Ghent to Lottie (Przymus) and Maximillian Gruhot. He attended country school in rural Ivanhoe and graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1953. Dave then attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for a time and also enlisted in the U.S. National Guard, achieving the rank of Staff Sargeant.
Dave married Sharon Larson of Madison, MN, on June 15, 1963. The couple made their home in rural Marshall where they raised five boys.
Dave worked a variety of construction jobs for A.R. Dwire, Deutz and Crow, Rich Dwire and Dwire, Inc. before starting his own company, D & G Excavating, Inc. in April, 1979. Dave remained active in the company until his retirement in February of 2007.
Dave was very proud of his Polish heritage and was always eager to share his collection of Polish jokes. Dave loved spending time with family and friends, especially his four grandchildren; David, Tegan, Saudia and Jonathan. Family traditions were important to Dave, especially making Gruhot sausage and duck blood soup. Dave loved to collect old farm tractors and construction equipment, and he looked forward to his weekly Thursday breakfast with his good friend, George Prairie. He also enjoyed his Thurday night âBible Studyâ. Dave was an active member of Holy Redeemer and the Knights of Columbus and was an instrumental part of planning and running the pancake breakfasts. He enjoyed spending time at his lake place in Lake Benton.
Dave died peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2008, at his residence in Marshall.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Marshall, sons Brian (Kristin) of Lynd, Kevin of Ghent, Brad (Karen) of Bloomington, Mark of Marshall and Kent (Cindy) of Post Falls, ID, four grandchildren, siblings Maxine (Louis) St. Aubin of Marshall, Donald (Dina) of Marshall, Edwin (Marjo) of Lake Benton, and Darlene Berndt of Garretson, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leonard and Elmer, sister-in-law Cathy Gruhot, brothers-in-law Algene Hoffman, Ken Berndt and niece Suzanne Hoffman.
