David Joseph Schreiber was born on November 1, 1935, at the family home in Ghent to Joseph and Helene (Welvaert) Schreiber. He started school in Ghent until his family moved; then he went to St. Edward’s Catholic School and on to the Minneota High School.

He attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul for six months until he was needed at home when his father broke his neck. In 1955 he joined the army and was lucky to be stationed in Germany. This allowed him to see much of Europe’s beautiful history.

He married Mary (Veit) Schreiber on April 24, 1962, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Milroy. They made their home on the farm near Taunton for almost 63 years. There they raised their four children, Jill, David, Jane and Thomas.

David’s Catholic faith was important to him. He was one of St. Edward’s first lectors and Eucharistic ministers.

David had many enjoyments in life. In his early years it was roller skating and bowling. He had a love of nature including his farm field crops, gardens, birds and later in life his kitties. He really enjoyed his grandchildren visiting the farm, picking his pumpkins, and sledding on the big snow hill. Recently, it was the great grandchildren visiting Grandpa and Grandma Kitty.

David passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, in Sioux Falls. He was 89 years old.

David is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Jill Schreiber (Craig) Smith of Bloomington, their children Marissa, David, Julia, and Anna (Ryan); son David (Kathy) Schreiber of Slayton, their children Kasey (Ben), Darien (Emma), and Brad (fiancée Halle); daughter Jane (Mike) Mairose of Monte Sereno, CA, their children Devan (Matt), Danielle (Sean), and Cody; son Thomas (Kemi) Schreiber of Redding, CA, their child Austin; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Sr. Angela Schreiber, Barb Guttormsson, Brian (Greta) Schreiber, Marcia (Ken) Maertens, and Terry (Donna) Schreiber, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his two grandchildren Kennedy and Kassidy Schreiber, parents Joseph and Helene Schreiber, brother Alan Schreiber, in-laws George and Bertha Veit, Louis and Agnes Veit, Jon Guttormsson, and nephews Kevin Guttormsson and Damian Maertens.
