Donald Dale Friend was born on February 8, 1918, in Marshall, to Erving and Myrtle (Ohde) Friend. Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. On June 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Margaret Pilotte. For 25 years, he owned and operated the Sportsmanâs Bar and Grill in Walnut Grove. He later worked for the Marshall Public Schools, retiring in 1982. Don enjoyed playing cards, pool, fishing, visiting with friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a 23 year volunteer for the Walnut Grove Fire Department and belonged to the VFW, Eaglesâ Club and was a 59 year member of the American Legion Post 113 of Marshall.
Don died on Sunday, August 14, 2011, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Marshall, son Joseph (and Donna) of Billings, MT, daughter Marilyn (and Jerry) Morhain of Sedalia, MO, daughter Barbara (and Keith) Rupp of Lincoln, NE, grandchildren Cyndi (and Doug) Kay, Michelle Friend, Charlie (and Joy) Friend, Mike (and Angela) Anderson, Dean (and Stephanie) Anderson, Angela (and John) Carns, Jennifer (and Greg) Nitzel, Joseph Rupp, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Brian Friend.
Memorials preferred to Prairie Home Hospice or Masses at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
