Donald Joseph Hay was born on June 19, 1920, in Burton Township, Yellow Medicine County, to Horace and Rose (Shimek) Hay. He attended schools in Minneota and Taunton. While living in Taunton, he served as Mayor, was on the fire department, and served on the school board. Don was a self-employed painter contractor until 1969. In October of 1969, he married Lucille (Gunderman) Fostvedt and the couple resided in Marshall. He continued with his painting and worked as an Interior Decorator at Southwest Minnesota State University until his retirement in 1982. In 2006, Don and Lucille moved to Boulder Estates. Don enjoyed his Model A cars, gardening, tinkering in the garage with whatever he could find, watching the Twins and spending time with family. In September of 2009, Don moved to the Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. He died on Monday, June 07, 2010, at the Care Center.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille, of Marshall, step-daughter Janeen Taveirne, brother Lowell (and Dorothy) Hay, brother-in-law Richard (and Juanita) Gunderman, sisters-in-law Dorothy McCuen and Genevieve (and Norman) Rehnelt, step-grandchildren Tyler and Ross Taveirne, niece Margaret (and Steve) McCuen, and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-son Randall Fostvedt.
