Donald Walter Juhl was born December 1, 1927 in Minneapolis to Walter and Gunda (Ramert) Juhl. Don and his family moved to Marshall in 1928. He attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School until the sixth grade and then attended Marshall High School until his graduation on June1, 1945. Don was drafted in to the United States Army in March of 1946, where he served in the China Theater for about one year until he was honorably discharged in September, 1947. Don then attended the Elgin Watchmaker School in Elgin, IL from January, 1949 until his graduation in September, 1949, having finished his year- long course in nine months. In 1950 Don joined the Army Guard Unit and in January 1951, his Guard Unit was re-activated and Don served in Korea until October of 1952. In 1953 he opened Juhlâs Jewelry in Cottonwood. On January 6, 1954 he married Jeanette Agnes Dieken and together they had 4 children; Steven, Douglas, Barbara and Beverly. In 1956 Don closed the jewelry store and worked at various jobs including the Cottonwood Liquor Store, Post Office and was on the Cottonwood Police Force. In 1964 he began working at Smithâs Farm Store in Cottonwood until 1977 and from there he held other employment with Deutz & Crow, Space Development and Western Community Action until his retirement in 1994.
Don enjoyed hunting, trapping, gardening, playing cards, pool and most especially enjoyed fishing. In Donâs later years he enjoyed golfing and took up the hobby of making his own wine. Don and Jeanette were married for 50 years until her death in 2004.
Donald passed away on November 11, 2014 at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center
in Marshall at the age of 86.
He is survived by his three remaining children; Steven Juhl of Marshall, Barbara (Jim) Louwagie of Norwood Young America and Beverly (Jim) Goslar of Cherokee, IA, six grandchildren; Amanda (Dusty) Harris, Joshua Goslar, Sierra Juhl, Natasha Goslar, Anthony Fratzke and Ashley Louwagie, one great grandchild Aubrey Harris, sister-in-law Marian Vandeputte and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Douglas Juhl, wife Jeanette and son Douglas Juhl.
