Edward Cyriel DeBaere was born on October 25, 1932, on a farm in Yellow Medicine County, to Camiel and Elizabeth (Hamerlinck) DeBaere. He grew up in rural Minneota, attended St. Edward Catholic School and graduated from Minneota High School. Ed went to work for Dr. Kerrâs Hatchery in Minneota. Doctor Kerr later sent him to the University of Minnesota to learn how to prevent illness with chickens. In 1952, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956. He then returned to the Kerr Hatchery. In 1960, Ed entered a partnership with the Chalet Club in Marshall. He owned and operated the supper club until 1995 with his nephew David VanDePutte. In his retirement, he and Lee Erb enjoyed wintering in Mission, TX, and travelling all over the United States in their motor home. He also enjoyed helping his friend, Jon Ewy, with farming in Deer Creek, MN. Ed was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
Ed died on Thursday, March 26, 2015, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. He is survived by his step children Mona (and David) Kramer of Elizabethton, TN, their son Todd, step-daughter-in-law Linda Erb of St. Cloud, children Lyndsey, Kelly and Mark, step-son Randy Erb of Marshall, children Adam and Haley, step-daughter Lynn (and Mike) Christianson of Marshall, children Alyssa, Lee and Jenna, great-grandchildren Sam, Eliana, Levi, Aiden, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving companion, Lavina âLeeâ Erb, step-chidren Michael Erb and Mark Erb and sister Mary VanDePutte.
