Elaine Marie Bump was born on May 28, 1933, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Ivan and Mary (Jandl) Bump. She grew up near Amiret, Minnesota, with a houseful of brothers and sisters. Tootie was always proud to remind everyone how she loved to help care for and raise her siblings. Tootie married Leo Schultz on June 28, 1952. They made their home in Marshall and raised eight children. You’d think growing up with 12 siblings and having eight children of her own, Tootie would look forward to her children being grown and gone; instead, she opened an in-home daycare and cared for those children like they were her own. She also volunteered at Marshall Public Schools as a “grandma” helping in any way she could. Tootie was involved in Catholic Daughters, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the VFW. Her hobbies included cleaning, cooking, and baking for her family (she made a mean pea macaroni salad), feeding birds and watching the Minnesota Twins.
Family meant everything to Tootie. She loved being around her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday with her beverage of choice – Miller Lite. Her presence at family gatherings and holidays will be missed.
In 2019, Tootie moved to the Tyler Nursing home and eventually Morningside Heights in Marshall. While at Morningside Heights, she was able to spend time with her sister Sherlee who also resides there.
Tootie passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2023. She is survived by her children Marcia (and Larry) Sik of Marshall, Steve (and Barb) Schultz of Albany, Mary (and Brad) Van Nevel of Brandon, Michael (and Lynn) Schultz of Marshall, Julie (and Ted) Geary of Marshall, Joel (and Shannon) Schultz of Marshall; grandchildren Amie (and Jason), Steve (and Bradie), Natalie (and Doug), Matthew, Sarah (and Alex), Michael, Lucas (and Leah), Erin, Benjamin (and Bryanna), Catie, Adam, Nicholas (and Lindsay), Rylee, and Abbie; great-grandchildren Brodyn, Charlotte, Dougie, Poppy Elaine, Owen, William, Maeve, Max and the newest addition to our family, Vivienne Marie.
Her surviving siblings are Sherlee Gregg, Lois Gernes, Louise (Art) Olson, Mike (Vicki) Bump, Tom (Jean) Bump, Barbara (Steve) Slaggie, Susan (Larry) Tubbs, as well as many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ivan and Mary, Leo, daughter Becky, son David, brothers Kenny, Lyle, Dennis and Mel and sister Carol, brothers-in-law Julius Gernes, Clint Gregg, Nick Ciemienski, and sisters-in-law Nadine Bump and Mary Bump.
When you come to honor her memory, wear something red which was her favorite color. Blessed be the memory of Tootie Schultz!
