Elmer Alfred Guth was born on April 6, 1925, in New Ulm, to August and Hertha (Rose) Guth. He grew up and attended New Ulm Public Schools. Elmer was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign from 1943 – 1946. After the war, he returned to New Ulm where he worked at Herbergers Clothing Store. On September 1, 1952, he was united in marriage to Marie Dummer at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. The couple moved to Marshall where Elmer owned and operated the Gu-Nels Clothing Store from 1953 – 1961. He then worked for the Gamble’s Furniture Department from 1961 until retirement in 1988. After retirement, he kept busy working for the Laundry Mat, Taylor’s Lumber and KHC Construction until 2007. Elmer was an active member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the Marshall VFW, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus Third Degree. He volunteered for the Holy Redeemer Bingo Group and delivered Meals on Wheels. Elmer enjoyed woodworking, fishing and watching all kinds of sports. He was passionate about playing cards and took great pride in his vegetable garden. Elmer will be remembered for his love of people, his quick wit and his ability to make people smile. He died on Friday, March 13, 2009, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Marie, of Marshall, daughter Diane (and Russell) Forstner of Aitkin, granddaughter Jessica, son Thomas (and Cathy) of Fairbault, grandson Jacob (and Mandy), great-granddaughter Stella, granddaughter Katy (and Jake Hemmah), granddaughter Mary, daughter Mary of Sioux Falls, SD, son Anthony (and Nancy) of Northfield, grandchildren Kristen and Eric, daughter Barbara (and Kim) Christensen of Tyler, granddaughters Nadia and Miranda, son David (and Michael) of Minneapolis, brother Roman Guth and sister Irene Dauer of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gregory in 1964 and several siblings. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Holy Redeemer School Foundation or Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
