Eugene Orville Bergstrom was born on May 8, 1929, in rural Swanville, MN, to Victor and Hazel (Jacobson) Bergstrom. When Gene was a baby, he and his family moved to Wabasso where he grew up and graduated from high school. Gene served in the U.S. Army from 1951 â 1953. On June 22, 1953, he was united in marriage to Magdalen Schueller in Seaforth. The couple made their home in Seaforth while Gene did carpentry work out of Springfield until 1957 when they moved to Marshall. Gene worked for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation from 1959 â 1990. He enjoyed woodworking and made countless banks and other items for his grandchildren. He and Maggie enjoyed old-time dancing and especially enjoyed the Larry Olson Band. Gene was a member of the American Legion, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Senior Woodworking Group. He died on Tuesday, February 01, 2011, at the Pipestone Hospital in Pipestone, MN, after many years of heart trouble.
Gene is survived by his wife, Magdalen of Marshall, daughter Gwenn (and Roger) Lofgren of LaVista, NE, their children Susan (and Rob), Sheila (and Dean), daughter Audrey (and Paul) Volkenant of Odessa, their children Travis (and Jennifer), Kristi Lynn and Janelle (and Justin), son David (and Barb) of Marshall, their children Andrea, Justin, Nicole, Joseph, and Bridget, son Mark of Marshall, his children Mallorie and Jacob, seven great-grandchildren, siblings Arlene Anderson of Dawson, Loraine (and Bob) Wilson of California, Lenore (and Bean) Bernardy of Wabasso, Bethal (and Winston) Anderson of Dawson, Donald (and Diane) Bergstrom of Milaca, Harold Bergstrom of Milaca, Lois (and Bill) Thiede of North Branch, Judith (and Bob) Schultz of Walnut Grove, Douglas (and Connie) Bergstrom of Lakeville, Chester (and Tillie) Bergstrom of Milaca and Robert Bergstrom of California, many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gerald.
