The funeral service for Evelyn Kaufman, 102, of Tracy, formerly of Worthington, will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Almlie-Horvath Funeral Home in Tracy with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Evelyn Ailene Kaufman was born on October 19, 1913 to August and Myrl (Sharret) Heil in Mobridge, South Dakota. She was baptized as an infant, confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and graduated from Hancock High School in 1930.
In 1935, Evelyn was united in marriage to William Kaufman. They made their home on a farm near Brewster, Minnesota where she worked long hours beside her husband. She owned KV Drygoods Store in Brewster during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1966, they moved to California where Evelyn was manager of Britts Department Store. She also managed a gift shop by Disney Land for many years. She was an accomplished seamstress who sewed most of her own and her daughters clothing. In 2006, Evelyn moved to Worthington and in 2012, moved to Tracy and became a resident at Prairie View Senior Living.
Evelyn enjoyed reading, building and decorating doll houses, which she sold or gave to family and friends, and designed, made, and sold Kaufmanâs Korny Kure corn bags. She also volunteered at a thrift shop until the age of 92.
On Monday, March 28, 2016 Evelyn died at the Prairie View Senior Living in Tracy at the age of 102.
She is survived by her daughters, Yvonne (Harlan) Gunther, and Sheryll (Floyd) Nelson; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Quillen of Southern, CA; three brothers, Delbert, Roger, and Kenny Heil, all of Southern, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, daughters, Marna Grube, and Leora Harlow, two brothers, Mahlon and Harvey, and sister, Arlene Frechette.
