Mass of Christian Burial for Frances Matthys, 93, of Marshall, will be Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. before the service at the church. The Catholic Daughters of America will be leading the rosary before the funeral mass. Interment will follow at St. Clotilde Catholic Cemetery in Green Valley.
Frances was born on March 9, 1930, in Marble Township, the daughter of Anton and Cecelia (Lipinski) Otto. She was born, raised and lived her entire life on the farm. She graduated from Canby High School in 1949, and then moved to Marshall and worked at a dental office and the cleaner’s.
On June 16, 1953 she married Duane Matthys at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, MN. They made their home on the farm in Stanley Township where they farmed for many years and enjoyed working together milking cows and field work.
Together they had four children: Diane (Greg) Louwagie, Donna (Mark) Horsman, Doreen (Danny) Owens and Daniel Matthys. They were also blessed with 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
In 1994 they moved to Marshall. Frances was a member of Catholic Daughters, Holy Redeemer CCW, Senior Companion and the Resurrection Choir. Her hobbies were journaling (since the age of 20), Rolle Bolle, playing cards, time with family and enjoying her iPhone (texting, taking pictures, and Facebook).
In 2020 Frances moved into Boulder Estates and was very social. In April of 2023 she moved Prairie Home Hospice McLaughlin House.
Frances died on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Prairie Home Hospice McLaughlin House in Marshall. She is survived by her two daughters: Diane Louwagie and Donna Horsman.
Frances is preceded in death by her parents, husband Duane (2013), son Daniel (2018), daughter Doreen (2019), two sisters Rose and Nettie, four brothers Walter, Harry, Joe and Father Leo Otto.
