George Delphany Prairie was born on May 22, 1917, in Cottonwood, to Edward and Leah (Blanchette) Prairie. He grew up on the family farm in Vallers Township until 1932. The family then lived and farmed in four other locations in Lyon County prior to his marriage. On December 29, 1943, George was united in marriage to Agnes Bakker. The couple farmed and raised their family in Coon Creek Township. On December 15, 1980, George and Agnes moved into their home in Russell. George was a people person. He enjoyed visiting, always had a story and was very willing to help anyone in need. He was a life-long farmer, an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. George belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Russell Chapter of the Lions Club, the Coon Creek Township Board and for 27 years was a member of the Lyon County Co-op Board. George died on Friday, February 20, 2009, at his home in Russell.
He is survived by his children Janet (and Bill) Schultz of Silver Springs, MD, Joan (and Tom Geisen) Prairie of Minneapolis, Steven Prairie of Balaton, Debra (and Gary Jongerius) of Stockton, CA, Douglas (and Fay) Prairie of Balaton, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sisters Marjorie Van Overbeke of Marshall and Dorothy (and Peter) Van Horn of Fountain Hills, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Agnes, daughter-in-law Linda Prairie, granddaughter Renae Lynn Schultz, two brothers and three sisters.
