The funeral service for Gerald Hetland, 81, of Marshall, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. â 7:00 p.m. at Rehkamp â Horvath Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m â 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Interment will take place at the Ellsborough Cemetery in Ellsborough Township.
Gerald Alvery Hetland was born on February 19, 1933, in Ellsborough Township to Ludwig and Myrtle (Larson) Hetland. He grew up in Ellsborough Township was Baptized into the Lutheran Faith at Ellsborough Lutheran Church and attended school in Ruthton. On September 28, 1963, he was united in marriage to Mary Gannott in Balaton. The couple lived in rural Ruthton and Gerald farmed with his father until moving to Marshall in the late 1960s. Gerald worked for Swift Company until his retirement in 1985. In their younger years, the couple enjoyed fishing. Gerald was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. He also enjoyed western movies, playing cards and spending time on the computer and at the casino. He was strong in his faith. He sang in the Ellsborough Lutheran Choir when he was younger and was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Marshall. He was most passionate about time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
Gerald died peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2015, surrounded by friends and family at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall. He is survived by his daughters Caryn Hetland of Minneota, Carmen Yost of Minneota and Carla (and Troy) Thompson of Taunton, grandchildren Landyn, Avery, Casey, Kalley, Riley, Andrew, Adam, and Austin, many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Myrtle, and wife, Mary.
