Gladys Irene Olson

Gladys I. Olson age 90 of Balaton, MN died Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the Sanford-Sioux Valley Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Balaton United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning. Interment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Balaton, with a luncheon served in the church social hall immediately following the burial. The Almlie Funeral Home of Balaton is handling the arrangements. Gladys Irene Olson was born October 21, 1922 to Earl and May (Spear) Hively in Russell, MN Lyon County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Balaton Presbyterian Church and attended Country School District #10, known as the “Red Top School”, located north of Balaton. At the age of fifteen, Gladys went to work as a housekeeper for many families in the area. On April 18, 1941 Gladys married James C. Dayland and they made their home near Balaton. They had five children and she will always be remembered by them as a wonderful, loving mother. After her husband’s death in 1993, she remained living in Balaton. On July 22, 1995 Gladys remarried to Dale Olson and they continued to make their home in Balaton. In the past, Gladys worked as a cook at the Garvin Corner Restaurant and also as a cook and in the laundry at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Balaton. She was a past member of the Balaton Presbyterian Church and a current member of the Balaton United Methodist Church, where she was active in the church women’s groups, Ladies Aid, as a Sunday School Teacher and was a lay delegate to the church’s annual conference. She enjoyed gardening, both vegetable and flowers her whole life, and had great memories of the Birthday Club get-togethers they used to have. She also enjoyed several trips out to the western states to visit family. In the fall of 2006, Gladys became a resident of the Lakeview Apartments in Balaton. On Tuesday, December 4, 2012 Gladys died, surrounded by her loving family, at the Sanford-Sioux Valley Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 90. Gladys is survived by her two sons, Robert (Betty) Dayland of Balaton, MN and Gordon (Judy) Dayland of Peterson, MN; one daughter, Bonnie (Marvin) Dwire of Marshall, MN; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Ray (Evelyn) Hively of Marshall, MN and Clifford Hively of Balaton, MN; two sisters, Alice Grey of Ruthven, IA and Helen (Arnold) Van Winkle of Balaton, MN; many nieces, nephews and friends. Her two husbands, James C. Dayland and Dale Olson, her parents, daughter, Linda Laursen, son, Darwin Dayland, two grandsons, James W. Dayland and David Dwire, one brother, Ralph “Bud” Hively, and one sister-in-law, Lois Hively preceded her in death.
