Harold Bruce Halverson was born September 25, 1941, in Marshall, MN to Odell E. Halverson and Lillian (Rogen) Halverson. He attended grade school in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1958. Shortly thereafter Harold enlisted in the US Navy and reported to Naval Training Center San Diego, CA, Sept. 1, 1959. While at boot camp Harold was chosen to be a member of the honor guard. Harold served in the US Navy, where he earned a Good Conduct Medal FIRST award. Harold was a parachute rigger airman USN serving at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. He was honorably discharged on September 13, 1962, at which time he transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve until August 31, 1965. After the three-year stint in the Navy, Harold went to barber school in Minneapolis in 1963 and returned to Marshall to work for Mel Schmidt out of a shop on Main Street. Then in 1965, they moved to Third Street where he would continue to cut hair for more than 55 years! In the early 70’s Harold purchased the business from Mel and renamed it The Barber Shop. In 1979 he was joined by his daughter, Dawn, who went to barber school in Sioux Falls, S.D. and they cut hair side by side until 1987. He has cut the hair of generations, grandpas, fathers, and sons. He loved being a barber and had a great knack for striking up a conversation with anyone. Harold continued to barber until he was 80 years old. One of his favorite lines was “Old barbers never die; they just can’t cut it like they used to.” Harold also worked part-time for years at the post office in Cottonwood, MN. His very first job was delivering newspapers for the Marshall Messenger.
Harold was united in marriage to Joan Marie Van Moer on February 16, 1974. Together they raised “Joan’s 4 Girls” and became a family of 6. Harold was an avid reader, he loved to golf and bowl, and he followed the Twins and Vikings. He was an ardent Vikings fan and hoped to see them win a Super Bowl. But most of all Harold loved family and loved spending time with family and many friends. Harold died on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at the Hospice House of Murray County, Slayton, MN. He previously resided at Prairie View Senior Living, in Tracy, MN, and prior to that Marshall, MN his entire life. He was a member of the Masonic Delta Lodge 117, Shriners, and First Lutheran Church.
