Harold Peter Neyens was born on April 16, 1922, on the family farm in Island Lake Township, to Peter and Katherine (Schiltz) Neyens. He grew up on the farm near Russell. On October 19, 1943, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Sullivan at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. During World War II, Harold served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. After his honorable discharge, he returned to farm in Lynd, and since 1948, at the current location on Goose Lake near Russell. Harold was passionate about farming and was a good provider for his family. He enjoyed wintering in Texas, his four-wheeler, Mexican music and polka dancing. He also enjoyed living on the lake and teaching his kids to water-ski. He was especially proud of his grandchildren. For the last couple of years, he has been living at the Divine Providence Nursing Home in Ivanhoe where he has received excellent care from a giving and compassionate staff.
Harold died on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the nursing home in Ivanhoe. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, of Russell, children Gene (and Carol) Neyens of Maple Plain, Norma Wuttke of Eden Prairie, Joan (and Gary) Isenberg of Brookings, SD, Sandy Caskey of Appleton, MN, Diane (and Keith) Burckhardt of Russell, Tom (and Darlene) Neyens of Russell, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Daren and Alan Neyens, daughter Patricia Nelson, her husband, Dr. George Nelson and son-in-law Loren Wuttke, and eight siblings.
