Irene Gabriella (VanVooren) DeVos was born on April 4, 1926, in Lyon County to Rene and Irma (VanVlaenderen) VanVooren. She attended school and graduated from Minneota High School. On October 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to Harry DeVos at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. The couple farmed in rural Marshall until 1976. After retirement, they moved to Minneota. Irene worked as a housekeeper at the Minneota Manor for many years. She also volunteered at the nursing home in many capacities including making quilts, preparing family meals and visiting with the residents. She was a very generous person and was a caretaker to her family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting, her grandchildren’s activities and was an avid sports fan. Irene also enjoyed riding her bike and could be seen riding around Minneota at least once per day. Irene died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 13, 2008. She is survived by her daughter Carol (and Douglas) Abels of Marshall, their children Bruce (and fiancé Kerianna Fettig, daughters Claire and Grace) Abels, Kristina (and fiancé Christopher Bohn) Abels, daughter Jean (and Michael) Kern, their children Tom (and Katie) Kern, great-granddaughter Kaylee, Jennifer (and Paul) Miller, great-grandchildren Sara, Lisa and Lane, and Jeff Kern, son Bruce (and Sherry) DeVos of Marshall, their children Curtis (and fiancé Sara Honkomp), Brian (and Jami) DeVos, daughter Janet (and Patrick) Bailey of Redwood Falls, their Children Denae and Colin, one sister Alice (and Ted) Deutz of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Harry.
