Irene DeVos

Irene Mary Goossens was born on July 5, 1914, in Northland Township, Lyon County, to Cyriel and Zulma (Dero) Goossens. She grew up in Lyon County and attended country school. Irene was hired to work for several families starting at the age of fourteen. On June 17, 1941, she married George Charles DeVos at St. Eloi Church in Ghent. They made their home on the DeVos family farm in Grandview Township in Lyon County where they farmed for forty plus years. She always had a large vegetable garden and raised chickens. In May 2003 Irene moved to the Madison Avenue Apartments in Minneota. In 2005 she moved to Madonna Meadows Assisted Living in Rochester to be close to her children. In September 2007 she moved to Madonna Towers Nursing Home in Rochester. Irene was a member of St. Eloi Church and St. Anne’s Altar Society. She enjoyed saying the rosary, gardening, baking, crocheting, cutwork embroidery, and watching her grandchildren. Irene died early Christmas morning, at Madonna Towers in Rochester, MN. Survivors include a daughter, Cathy of Rochester; two sons Charles of Rochester, and Donald of Marshall, five grandchildren; two great-grandsons, and a brother Emil (Louise) Goossens, of Minneota. She is also survived by her special friend and former daughter-in-law, Janet DeVos of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband George, a son Steven, two sisters Mary (Hank) VanHee and Agnes (Daniel) Laleman, and two brothers Wilfred (Elodie) Goossens and John Goossens. The family suggests memorials be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, Rochester, Minnesota, or the Marshall Radio Rosary.
