Richard "Dick" Hyllested age 83 of Tracy, MN died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at the Sanford-Sioux Valley Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Services are 11:00 AM Monday, April 28, 2008 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tracy. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Sunday, April 27, 2008 at the Almlie Funeral Home in Tracy with a CCW Rosary at 5:00 PM and a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
John Richard Hyllested was born March 16, 1925 to Peter and Martha (Vogelsberg) Hyllested in Tracy, MN, Lyon County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended Tracy Public Schools. He then went to work for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for several years. Dick then enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving as a signalman on the USS Enterprise, in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Tracy and went back to work for the railroad.
For nearly forty years Dick was a conductor for the CNW Railroad, responsible for switching tracks, and also, coupling and uncoupling the trains. Most of that time was spent working on what was known as the Canby Line, from Tracy to Canby, MN. He retired in the early 1980âs and remained a resident of Tracy.
He was a member of the St. Maryâs Catholic Church in Tracy. Dick was also a very active member of his community. He was a member of the Tracy American Legion, Tracy Lions Club, and the Tracy Booster Club. He took an active interest of the Tracy High School sports, working as a timer for track and field events and also on the chain gang for football games for over twenty years. His interests besides Tracy sports were also following the Minnesota Vikings and the Twins. Dick also enjoyed flying and held a pilots license for many years, getting together with friends for coffee, and he loved traveling to visit his brother, sisters and many nieces and nephews.
On Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Dick died at the Sanford-Sioux Valley Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 83.
Dick is survived by his one brother, Frank Hyllested of Anoka, MN; three sisters, Dorthy Storck of Marshall, MN, Johanna Bartlett of Stillwater, OK and Carol (Robert) Wendt of Lakeville, MN; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
His parents, two brothers, Martin and Harold, and three sisters, Helen Hyllested, Fern Trout and Verna Wadhams preceded him in death.
