Mass of Christian Burial for James Louis Calvin, 93, of Marshall, MN, will take place on Monday, August 28, 2023, at Holy Redeemer Church in Marshall, MN, beginning at 11:00 a.m. A public visitation will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Holy Redeemer Church from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at Holy Redeemer on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall following the funeral mass. Upon conclusion of the graveside service a funeral luncheon will be held at Carlin Hall.
James Louis Calvin was born on September 2, 1929, to Louis and Marion (Spielmann) Calvin in Marshall, MN. James grew up on the family farm nine miles east of Marshall. He attended country school through the 8th grade. James then began working on a number of farms in the area.
James met and fell in love with Geraldine Lindsay. The couple was united in marriage on January 23, 1951, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Milroy. The couple farmed for a few years before moving their family to Marshall. Together they raised five children.
James had a passion for sports. He liked to play golf, go bowling, and take camping trips. James took great pride in his lawn and his ability to assist his family and friends with remodeling projects. James's family was important to him. He made it a point to get the family together at Waterama annually. Another notable trip was the family vacation to Rapid City, SD.
James died on August 20, 2023, at the Prairie Home Hospice Lockwood House in Marshall, MN.
He is survived by his daughter Vickie Radel; grandson Adam (Carissa) Radel, their children Rowen, Gavin “Frankie,” and Lucia; grandson Paul (Stephanie) Radel, their children Lilliana, Levi, and Oliver; son Daniel (Donna) Calvin; granddaughter Dawn (Derek) Moorse, their children Jordan (Nathan) Roberts, Hidie (Justin) Stattelman, Morgan, and Ella; grandson Jeff (Cade) Calvin-Nethercott, their children Riley and Finn; three great-great-grandchildren Becca, Braxton, and Blakley; son Don (Julie) Calvin; granddaughter Nikki (Chris) Rostad, their children Reese and Reagan; grandson Matt (Amber) Calvin, their children Chase and Wyatt; son Mike (Nanci) Calvin; granddaughter Samantha Calvin; grandson Alex Calvin; children of the late Debra “Deb” Nielsen: granddaughter Kris Fenton, her children Cassidy and Jesse; granddaughter Stacie (Jarett) Munneke, their children Porter and Lenora; son-in-law Ken Nielsen; step-granddaughter Heather (Nick) Nielsen-Magelee, their children Blake and Annika; step-grandson Brad (Jennie) Nielsen, their children Lincoln, Emmitt, Karsyn, and Kaelien; brother Richard (Carol) Calvin and sister Barbara Paulson; and several nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Calvin; daughter Debra “Deb” Nielsen; parents Louis and Marion Calvin; and sister Betty Lidholm.
