Janel Marie DeRoode was born on June 2, 1953, in Marshall, to John and Alice (Knigge) DeRoode. She grew up in Ghent, attended St. Eloi Catholic Grade School, and graduated from Minneota High School in 1971. In 1976, Janel was injured in an automobile accident, leaving her with lifelong health problems, which she handled with grace, humor, and a positive attitude.
