Joel John DeRuyck was born on February 23, 1965, in Marshall, to Donald and Elaine (Boerboom) DeRuyck. He grew up in Marshall and graduated from the Marshall High School. Joel then attended Mankato State University. He worked as the Lawn and Garden Manager at D & M Implement in Marshall. He also owned Papaâs Pizza in Spicer. Joel was an avid racing enthusiast. He enjoyed motocross racing, driving sports cars and watching racing on television. He was also a sports enthusiast. He coached hockey for many years and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings.
Joel died unexpectedly on Friday, December 6, 2014, at his residence in Lynd, as the result of a heart attack. He is survived by Trish Behnke and Jacob Moravetz of Lynd, parents Don and Elaine DeRuyck of Marshall, brother Brad (and Cheryl) DeRuyck of Marshall, their children Nicholas, Nathan and Bria, sister Sara (and Chris) Hansot of Seattle, WA, their children Noah, Stella, Frances and Wyatt, and his grandmother Frances Boerboom of Marshall. He was preceded in death by Paige Moravetz and his paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.
