John Joseph Van Overbeke was born on September 29, 1964, in Marshall, to Duane and Diane (De Crock) Van Overbeke. He attended Lynd and Marshall Schools, graduating from Marshall High School in 1983. John also attended SMSU in Marshall, specializing in culinary services and was an outstanding cook. John enlisted into the U.S. Army after graduation and obtained the rank of Sargent while serving in Germany. He left the Army with an honorable discharge in 1986. On September 15th, 1984, he was united in marriage to Melissa Werpy and to this union was born son Jordyn. John worked at McLaughlin and Schulz, Koch Oil (Flint Hills) and Midwest Contracting. John suffered a work related injury at Midwest on May 18th, 1999, that left him disabled. Despite his handicap, he was able to enjoy most aspects of life and never complained. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing with his boys, family and fishing buddy Tommy Barber. Besides fishing, John enjoyed watching his boys grow up, going to their wrestling matches and spending time with family and friends. John loved his family! He was kind and sincere and always the life of the party. He will be greatly missed.
John died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 27, 2018, at his residence in Minneota. He is survived by his sons Jordyn, Landyn and Avery (and their mother, Caryn Hetland) his biological daughter Macey and grandson Ayden, siblings Wendy Van Overbeke of Hopkins, MN, Randy (and Susan) Van Overbeke of Russell and Melinda (and Ron) Lyng of Placerville, CA, nieces and nephews Erica, Danica, Jessica, Taryn, Boone, Jada and parents Duane and Diane Van Overbeke of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and Uncles Lyle Van Overbeke and Victor De Crock and Aunt Connie De Crock.
