Joseph Cyriel "Joe" Polfliet was born on February 28, 1945, in Marshall, to Cyriel and Anna (Vandendries) Polfliet. He attended elementary school in Ghent and Central Catholic High School in Marshall. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1962. He served during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Flight Wings Service Medals. Joe was a member of the American Legion of Ghent and the VFW Club of Minneota.
On April 26, 1969 he was united in marriage to Shari Sharp at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. Joe spent all of his life in the Ghent area where he was self-employed carpenter for 40 years. He was also a truck driver for various companies in the Marshall area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, rolle bolle, playing a game of cards or pool and enjoyed having a beer and a good joke. He was most passionate about his family, especially his children and grandchildren. Joe died at home in Ghent on Wednesday, October 22, 2008, after a three year battle with cancer.
He is survived by his mother, Anna, of Ghent, son Joshua (and Nicole) of Ghent, daughter Charity of Marshall, step-son Cody Marchant of Marshall, friend Shari Sharp of Queen Creek, AZ, grandchildren Ashley, Jordyn, Shaelah, Sabyn, Serenity, Jenika, other cherished children Morgen and Alex, siblings Barb (and Jans) Kor of Madison Lake, Kathleen Gawarecki of Minneota, Pauline (and Duwayne) Hoffman of Canby, Teri (and Don) Krumwiede of Benson, Mary (and Jerry) DeSmet of Hendricks, Martha (and James) Melrose of Porter, Margaret (and Keith) Kindelberger of Ortonville, Mike (and Sandie) Polfliet of Ghent, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, infant sister and infant brother.
