Joseph Van Uden

Joseph was born and raised on the family farm in Lyon County, Westerheim township to Anton and Mary (Hennen) VanUden on October 11, 1918. He attended school at Holy Trinity in New Ulm for 3 years, then continued at St. Agnes school in Ghent. On April 27, 1943 Joe married Bertha Louwagie at St. Clotildes Church in Green Valley. They farmed in Lyon County and lived on the family farm for 57 years. They spent winters in Arizona for 17 years. Joe enjoyed cards, Rolle Bolle and golf. He was a member of the Catholic Order or Foresters, Marshall Senior Citizens and was a lifetime member of St. Eloi Catholic Church. Joe continued to live on the farm 7 years after Bertha’s death on March 26, 2001. In 2008, Joe moved to Assisted Living – Talahi Nature’s Point in St. Cloud. Joseph died peacefully with family at his side on Saturday, March 31st at St. Benedicts Senior Community in St. Cloud. Joe is survived by: two daughters, Bernadine (Ed) Hennek of St. Cloud, and Doreen VanUden, OSF of Bloomington and 6 grandchildren; Jean (Kevin) Goenner of Clear Lake, Joe (Sharla) Hennek of Clear Lake, Sherri (Tony) Sykora of Rice, Amy (Jason) Ness of St. Cloud, Mark (Jackie) Hennek of St. Cloud, Ann (Chris) Skuza of Sauk Rapids, and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha, in 2001; parents Anton and Mary; 4 sisters, Ann VanKeulen, Carrie Verschelde, Mary Louwagie, Helen VanUden; 3 brothers, John, Hubert and Arnold. Thank you to the staff at Nature’s Point Assisted Living, St. Benedict’s Senior Community, St. Cloud Hospital Home Care and Hospice, and Father Meinard Dinndorf.
