Kelly “Kell” Miller was born on December 30th, 1962 in Marshall, MN to Daryl and Veronica Miller. Kell, the fifth of seven children, was baptized and confirmed at Holy Redeemer Church. He attended Holy Redeemer and had an eventful youth living carefree. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1981.
Kell’s parents taught him the value of hard work, dedication and the love of boxing, the great outdoors and all God’s creations. Daryl taught Kell how to lay brick where he began working in the family business which led to his interest in construction. In the late 1990’s, Kell and his brothers began working on their own doing drywall. He was a proud businessman who valued his work and, like his father, taught many men his trade and the value of hard labor.
Kell met Lisa in 1989 and they started dating in 1990. Together, he and Lisa raised Emily before the family welcomed a baby girl, Michaela, in 1993 – the girls were the lights of his life. Though Lisa and Kell separated in 1996, they continued life as best friends and were the best co-parents ever! Kell kept busy with the girls and many of their youth activities, spending many early mornings at the ice rink and late afternoons at the archery club. He often took the kids to the lake to swim or fish, to DQ for ice cream treats and even coached Michaela to hold many State archery records. Kell taught Emily and Michaela that there was much more in life than meets the eye. In 2010, Kell was blessed with his first grandbaby Jaeda – boy, did she turn his world upside down with Hadli and Creed following suit! Papa Kelly was their absolute favorite person and he enjoyed spoiling them with candy and juice boxes every time he visited. Kell also loved to spoil his 3 grand puppies – Dakota, Trayn and Tali.
For the last 12 years, Sundays were reserved for family. Every Sunday it meant the whole family gathered at Emily’s to spoil the Grands and eat a yummy family supper prepared by Cody. In 2020, Michaela and Jeremy moved across the street from Kell in Garvin. For the last two years, they visited almost daily and enjoyed weekly suppers together. In the last few months, Michaela and Jeremy became the real hero’s, stopping daily to help where needed.
Kell passed away peacefully on April 25th, 2022, at Our House in Slayton, MN. He will always be remembered for his hard work and love of the outdoors. His quick wit and his infamous smile will not be forgotten.
The family wishes to thank those that cared for Kell in his last days on this earth. Especially the staff at Sanford, Prairie View Senior Living & Hospice of Murray County.
He is survived by his children: Emily and Cody Nelson, Michaela and significant other Jeremy Schreier; his granddaughters Jaeda, Hadli and Creed; his mother Veronica; siblings: Martin (Lisa), Rick (Beth), Cheryl (Jeff) Stange, Todd (Karen), and Murt Miller; best friend Lisa Towne, his Godson Connor Towne and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Daryl; brother Kim; nephew Nicholas and many other extended family members.
Blessed be his memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
