Lawrence Athanas Henle was born on February 8, 1931, in Marshall, MN, to A.J. and Theresa (Welter) Henle. He grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1949. Larry served in the U.S. National Guard for five years. On April 24, 1954, he was united in marriage to Barb Timm in St. Paul.
Larryâs newspaper career spanned over 56 years, he sold his first ad for the Lyon County Independent while still in high school. After selling the family newspaper in 1973, Larry moved to Willmar to manage a shopper. Larry returned to Marshall in 1987 to finish his career as general manager of the Independent. Larry retired in 1994. Larry and Barb enjoyed motoring in their MGâs, traveling tens of thousands of miles to 20 consecutive national MG meets. Larry spent endless hours detailing his vehicles. Larry spent 25 years on the Marshall Fire Department, ten of those as chief.
Larry died on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, surrounded by family at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barb (Timm) Henle; children, Nancy Scheele (Dave), Mark Henle (Marcy), John Henle (Belinda) and David Henle (Vicki); grandchildren Jenny, Jackie, Mark, Tess, Nikki, Bridget, Branden, Chad, Derek, Beth, Ben; and great-grandchildren Sydney, Zachary, Ryan, Brady, Wyatt, Revan, Emery, Asher, Henley, Tolland, Taylor, Charlotte, Thurston, Greta. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Rosemarie and Dorothy and brother Ray. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Prairie Home Hospice of Marshall.
