Leo Peter Wersal was born on September 17, 1935, in Springfield, MN, to George and Frieda (Haas) Wersal. He attended both country school in Dotson and St. Raphael Catholic School in Springfield. After his schooling, he helped on the family farm. On November 22, 1955, he was united in marriage to Darlene Helget at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn. Leo worked as a meat cutter in Sanborn and Belle Plaine before taking a job at the Pantry Grocery in Springfield. He later worked for the Swanson Grocery in New Ulm. In 1969, he came to work for the Fairway Store in Marshall. He first managed the meat department and later managed the store and became part owner of the store. In 1986, the couple moved to Sioux Falls where Leo continued to work as a meat cutter. Leo and Darlene spent 15 years full time RVing after their retirement and returned to live in Marshall in 2013. Leo enjoyed motorcycling, golfing, bowling and playing cards. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Leo died on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at the Sanford Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Marshall, children David Wersal of Cottonwood, Debbie (and Mike) Engler of Marshall, Rick (and Carrie) Wersal of Marshall, Randy (and Carol) Wersal of Ivanhoe, Scott (and Michelle) Wersal of Marshall, Brad (and Brenda) Wersal of Sioux Falls, SD, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, siblings Patty Helget of Cleghorn, IA, Clement (and Donna) Wersal of Springfield, MN, Annette (and Buzz) Kelly of Comfrey, MN, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Arlene Stage, Delores Roiger and Marcella Seirens and brothers Peter, Robert, George Jr., and Lenis.
