Leonard G. Skewes was born on May 15, 1919 in Elysian, MN. He served in World War II in the Navy from 1941-1945. He married Virginia âGinnyâ Sterler in Marshall on January 17, 1941. Leonard founded Skewes Jewelry in Marshall in 1948, which his son Jim and grandson Brandon continue to own and operate. Leonard wintered in Florida and in 1993 moved there to live. They returned to Marshall in January of 2009, and Ginny now resides at Boulder Estates. Ginny and Leonard were married for 68 years. Leonard enjoyed golf, playing cards, reading westerns and suspense novels, spending time with family and friends, and traveling with Ginny. Leonard was a member of the Shriners, Masons, American Legion, and the VFW.
Leonard died on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall, MN.
Leonard is survived by his wife Virginia of Marshall, son Jim (Pat) Skewes, of Marshall, daughter Barb Skewes of Arlington, VA., five grandchildren Sonja (Brian)Thoreen, Monique Skewes, Brandon (Lori) Skewes, Gretel Truong, and Ben Truong, three great-grandchildren Lydia Thoreen, Zachary Thoreen, and Ethan Skewes, and sister-in-law Faye Sterler of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Doreen Cuthbert, and brothers Kenneth and Fred Skewes.
