Louise Lavella (Mohrman) Kiel was born on May 12, 1929, in rural Hancock to Gust and Louise (Messner) Mohrman. She was the ninth child of 14. She grew up and attended school in Morris. From an early age, Louise babysat for relatives and farming neighbors. She worked as a waitress in Morris, and after moving to Marshall, she waitressed at Paâs, which was three doors down from Arnold Motors, unbeknownst to her, where her future husband worked. Louise worked various jobs, including at the Egg Plant for a time, before continuing waitressing at the Minnesota Café downtown. It was there that she met Marvin Kiel, the love of her life, who caught her eye with a 25 cent tip. She was united in marriage to Marv on May 17, 1952, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Prior to marrying Marv, Louise converted to Catholicism, which provided a lifetime of strength. She had a special devotion and close relationship to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Louise was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters, American Legion, and Military Order of Cooties Auxiliary. She visited the hospitals for over 30 years as a member of the Cootie Auxiliary. Louise spent many years enjoying baking Belgian Cookies, donuts, and pies, and cooking for friends and family. Another of her loves were children, and she was a child care provider for 15 years. Louise was proud to have made hundreds of pillows for children, and a few grown-ups too. Mom thoroughly enjoyed spirited banter with several of the nursing staff during her time at Minneota Manor. Louise was a good and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother throughout her life. Her grandchildren Julia and William have a lifetime of memories of fun times with their grandma.
Louise died on Sunday, August 25, 2019, with her daughter by her side, at the Minneota Manor in Minneota.
