Lucille Ethel Miller

d. March 2, 2014

Lucille Ethel (Paul) Miller was born December 20, 1917, in Ivanhoe, MN, to William Henry and Ruby Ruth (Prosch) Paul. As a child, she moved with her family to Marshall where she continued her education. With six very clever and mischievous brothers, Lucille had to learn to think fast to stay one step ahead of them. On May 25, 1940, Lucille married Albert Miller in Marshall. She was known as “Suzy” to Albert and her brothers, and later as “Gramma Suzy” to her grandchildren. Lucille was a meticulous housekeeper and a wonderful cook and baker. She loved trying out new recipes and the home was often filled with delicious aromas. As a special birthday treat for her children, they could choose to have a birthday cake or a pan of her brownies. Most of the time they chose the brownies! After raising her children, Lucille and Albert worked at Mikes Café for a time. After Albert passed away, Lucille continued to waitress there for several years. Lucille enjoyed embroidery and crochet. She made several sets of embroidered dish towels and numerous afghans. She was happy to give them away to family and friends, especially to her granddaughters for their “hope chests”. She was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings. Lucille liked playing games, especially Yahtzee. She was wickedly lucky at cards, often to the dismay of Albert, and later playing bingo at the nursing home. She was an extremely honest person. She was once given too much change at the local grocery store. She did not realize it until she got home and immediately called the store to inform them. They told her to just keep it, but the next morning she walked several blocks to return the money. She was in her 80’s at the time. Lucille’s greatest gift to her children and grandchildren is the example she set by being a strong, loving and generous woman. Lucille died on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. Lucille is survived by her children Carol (Dennis) Van Overbeke of Gothenburg, NE, Cliff (Barb) Miller of Bloomington, MN, Linda (Don) Breyfogle of Marshall, Greg (Linda) Miller of Coon Rapids, MN, and Perry (Susan) Miller of White, SD; nine grandchildren Scott, Jon (Jill), Marc, Eric (Marie), Shannen (Bruce), Molly (Curtis), Kory, Kelly (Ben), and Kasey; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Edith and Jean Paul; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Larry; six brothers; and infant sister.
