Lula Hodges

Lula Emma (Carrow) Hodges was born on May 26, 1919, in Marshall, to Thomas Carrow Jr. and Veronica (Grandpre) Carrow. She grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1938. Lula then attended Mankato Teacher’s College, obtaining her Teacher’s License in 1940. She taught rural school. On December 29, 1941, she was united in marriage to Maynard Hodges. The couple lived and raised their family in Marshall. Lula resumed her teaching career as a second grade teacher at Holy Redeemer School in Marshall in 1969. In 1974, she received a BS in Elementary Education at Southwest State University in Marshall. After her retirement, Lula continued to teach as a Senior Volunteer and CCD instructor. She also had a lifelong passion for reading and learning. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking and playing bridge. She was an active volunteer and belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America, CCW, the Secular Franciscan Order, was a 4-H leader and volunteered at the Thrift Shop and Senior Citizens Center. Lula died on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by her children Mary Ellen Sharp of Gordon, NE, Evonne (and Kenneth) Kremer of Winsted, MN, Charlene (and Robert) Tillemans of Minneota, Beverly (and Stephen) O’Connor of Owatonna, MN, Thomas (and Alice) Hodges of Russell, Margaret (and Thanh) Tang of St. Louis Park, MN, 25 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, sister Fern Kerkvliet of Marshall and nieces Mary Rogers and Donna Hasz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Maynard, son David and daughter-in-law Arlene Hodges, granddaughter Bertha Jean Hodges, son-in-law Walter Sharp, grandson Jay Sharp, and great-grandson Alex Sharp.
