Lumina Rachel Girard was born to Sarah (Papineau) and Narcisse Girard on June 24, 1917 in Marshall. In her early years, she grew up on the family farm and attended a rural country school. She had polio during the 1950âs epidemic. The treatment and therapy were at the Sister Kenny Institute in Minneapolis. Her determination to live a long life helped her to beat all odds.
Her life consisted of caring for others, including her aging parents. Many children were given guidance and love through her care. Children always brought a smile to her face. Lumina loved plants and flowers, and wanted to share slips of plants with whoever wanted them. There are many plants growing in her memory. Faith was very important to her. She lived it in every aspect of her life and shared it with others. Lumina enjoyed playing cards, bingo and a special marble game. She was often the winner! The many craft items that she made were always shared with others.
Lumina died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. The family would like to thank the staff of Avera Morningside Heights Care Center for their care and love in the past 10 years.
Lumina is survived by her sister-in-law Rosemary Girard, many nieces, nephews, special niece and caregiver Angie (Girard) Taft, and many special friends. Preceding her in death, are her parents and 12 sisters and brothers.
Blessed be her memory.
