Mary Jane (Sims) Juel was born on September 8, 1935, in Keokuk, IA, to Ralph and Ethel (Peterson) Sims. She grew up in Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk High School. In 1970, she was united in marriage to John N. Juel in Willmar. The couple lived in Springdale, AR, Sioux City, IA, Reading PA, and Jasper, IN, before settling in Marshall in 1984. Mary was very creative and enjoyed crafts and sewing. She also enjoyed reading and had a keen interest in the Civil War era. She was a good cook and made sure none of her guests went hungry. Mary owned and operated a slightly used clothing store for a time.
Mary died on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, after four years of declining health. She is survived by her husband, John, of Marshall, children Scott (and RoseMarie) DePew of Carthage, MO, Patrick (and Cyndi) DePew of Fayetteville, AR, Christi (and Bob) McCallen of Wabash, IN, Tim DePew (and Tracy Beaird) of Milroy, Rev. Amy (and Robert) Juel-Palmer of Willmar, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
