Mary Joann (DeVlaeminck) VanOverbeke was born on April 18, 1921, in Eidsvold Township, Lyon County, to Rene and Dora (Stienessen) DeVlaeminck. She was baptized at St. Edward Catholic Church, received her first Holy Communion and Confirmed at St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton. Mary attended grade school at District 31 in Burton Township. After graduation, she helped her parents on the farm. On April 22, 1941, she was united in marriage to Walter Van Overbeke at St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton. They later became members of St. Edward Catholic Church of Minneota. Mary was an honorary member of the St. Joan of Arc Society. The couple farmed in the Minneota and Taunton Area until they retired and moved into their home in Minneota in 1988. Walter passed away on February 6, 2004. Mary enjoyed reading, cooking, baking and her favorite was embroidering and sewing, visiting with family and friends, watching sports involving her grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings and enjoyed watching their games on TV. Mary volunteered at the Minneota Manor for many years before old age started to creep in.
Mary died on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall. She is survived by her daughters Luann Pohlen of Marshall, Lynn (and Tom) Andries of Marshall, sons Duane (and Diane) of Marshall, Ordell (and Ruthine) of Maplewood, Douglas (and Sharon) of Minneota and Lee of Hutchinson, 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, son Lyle, parents Rene and Dora DeVlaeminck, and sisters Margaret DeVlaeminck, Helen Jelen and Adeline Pesek.
