Mary Ann (DeVlaeminck) Verschelde was born on April 3, 1919, in Ulsta, Belgium, to Archie and Augusta (Remmerie) DeVlaeminck. When she was a baby, Mary moved with her family to the Ghent/Minneota area where she grew up and attended country school. On October 9, 1945, Mary was united in marriage to August (Gus) Verschelde at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. The couple farmed East of Minneota until 1954, when they purchased a farm North of Taunton. They retired in 1982 and later moved to Minneota. Mary enjoyed ceramics, quilting, raising chickens in the summer and baking. In their later years, Mary and Gus enjoyed travelling and an occasional trip to the casino. She was most passionate about spending time with her family.
Mary died on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at the Sanford Health Canby Campus. She is survived by her children Joyce (and Larry) West of Madison, Gene (and Brenda) Verschelde of Minneota, Shirley Swanson of Dallas, son-in-law Gordy Loyson of Minneota, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Audrey Loyson, and siblings Margaret Polman, Robert and George DeVlaeminck.
