Mathilda L. Kas age 88 of Woodstock, MN died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Cozy Corner Assisted Living in Elkton, SD. Services will be 10:30 AM Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Chandler Reformed Church. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the Chandler Funeral Chapel and continuing one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Edgerton, MN at 1:00 PM, following a luncheon served in the church social hall immediately after the service. The Chandler Funeral Association is handling the arrangements. Mathilda Leola Kas was born September 5, 1923 to Jake and Jennie (Vos) Sluis on the family farm in Burke Township, Pipestone County, MN. She was baptized and professed her faith in the Reformed Church and attended Country School District #21. Mathilda then entered Edgerton Public Schools and graduated from Edgerton High School in 1941. On January 9, 1947 Mathilda married William Kas at her parent’s home near Woodstock, MN. They spent 61 years of life together farming in the Woodstock area. She was a housewife and mother to her five children, and helped on the farm with chores. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, canning, cooking and both flower and vegetable gardening. Mathilda was a member of the Chandler Reformed Church and was active over the years in Circle and other ladies groups within the church. In May of 2011 Mathilda became a resident of the Cozy Corner Assisted Living in Elkton, SD, where she died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the age of 88. Mathilda is survived by her three sons, Willard (Wilvina) Kas of Pipestone, MN, Richard (Evonne) Kas and Roger (Donna) Kas both of Woodstock, MN; two daughters, Joyce (Richard) DeGroot of Luverne, MN and Marilyn (Thomas) Schwebach of Egan, SD; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, James (Jeanette) Sluis of Edgerton, MN; nieces, nephews and friends. Her husband, William, her parents, two infant sons, one brother and one sister, preceded her in death.
